What is the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. It serves as the final game of every NFL season and has been played on the second Sunday in February since 2022. The game was created as part of a 1966 merger agreement between the NFL and its rival, the American Football League (AFL), to have their best teams compete for a championship. The first four Super Bowls were played before the merger, with the NFL and AFL each winning two. After the merger in 1970, all games have been played between the two best teams from each conference.

The Super Bowl is more than just a game; it has evolved into an unofficial American holiday, with viewing parties held in homes, taverns, and restaurants throughout the country. The week leading up to the game is highlighted by extensive media buildup and a festival atmosphere in the host city. Despite its significance, the NFL restricts the use of its “Super Bowl” trademark, leading to it often being referred to as the “big game” or other generic terms by non-sponsoring corporations. The day the game is played is often referred to as “Super Bowl Sunday” or simply “Super Sunday”.

Winning teams are awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the coach who won the first two Super Bowls. Among the NFL’s current 32 teams, 20 have won a Super Bowl and 15 hold multiple titles. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots have the most Super Bowl titles at six each, and the Patriots also have the most Super Bowl appearances at 11. The Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only franchises to be undefeated in multiple Super Bowls, having each won two. The Patriots and the Denver Broncos hold the record for the most defeats in the Super Bowl at five each. The game is hosted by a different city each year.
